A dog's sense of smell is highly sensitive. In fact, it ranges from 10,000 to 100,000 times more superior than ours! This is because a dog's scent organ is about 4 times larger than a human's.
How were they trained?
Termite detection dogs are trained the same way as Police and Customs dogs except that they are taught to detect the scent of termites. These termite detection dogs undergo months of intensive training with specialists before being put into service. What about the other termite detection tools in the market?
The most advanced technology that is used to detect termites these days are thermal imagers and, acoustic or microwave emitting devices. What property owners don't realize is that these devices DO NOT directly target termites. Thermal imagers are used to detect temperature variations to pinpoint moist and humid conditions that are conducive for termites while acoustic devices detect the vibrations caused by termites tapping their heads along a gallery.
