Singapore is justifiably proud of its reputation as a "Garden City", clean, green and beautiful. Lush public parks and extensive use of trees combine to create a pleasant living and working environment. At ORIGIN, we work to help protect and enhance this remarkable environment, for the benefit of all.

Rain trees are a common, and when healthy, beautiful sight in Singapore, lining the expressways and majority of the roads. They not only provide shade and "green canopies", they also contribute greatly to the environment. To understand why, it is necessary to know a little about tree biology:

Trees undergo photosynthesis during the day, a process whereby they use energy from the sun to produce sugars, effectively making food on which to survive and grow. The chemical processes involved in photosynthesis use a few components, one of which is the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, which is present in the environment. Carbon dioxide is a known ‘greenhouse' gas, meaning that it belongs to a group of gases that contribute to global warming. Therefore, maintaining the viability and health of the rain trees is important in ensuring that the environmental balance is sustained, resulting in better air quality for all to enjoy.

Unfortunately, these magnificent trees are prone to attack from pests, and it is here that ORIGIN was able to render an effective, and most importantly, environmentally friendly solution. Caterpillars are able to wreak havoc on trees, devouring leaves and effectively ‘balding' them. Not only does this deteriorate the trees ability photosynthesize, it also causes great stress, negatively affecting its health.

In conjunction with the National Parks Board, ORIGIN developed entirely natural, environmentally friendly treatment processes using naturally occurring bacteria to destroy caterpillars, even high up in the canopies, without affecting the trees, surrounding foliage or other wildlife. As well as the rain trees we have also worked extensively to protect other species of trees, notably a large number of Royal Palms that were being attacked and damaged by Rhino beetles. We are very proud of the excellent results that have been delivered and for continuing to play a role in maintaining Singapore's Clean, Green and Beautiful Environment.
