Environmental sustainability
Certified with ISO 14001: One area of interest for ORIGIN is that of environmental sustainability. This is an issue we hold dear to our hearts, and over the years, we have put in place many internal processes to ensure greater environmental sustainability not just in the pest control solutions we offer, but in every aspect of our operations. It can be said that the spirit of environmentalism permeates our day to day activities, and as such, we sought to hold ourselves accountable to high standards which are transparently accredited.
This pushed us to become the first pest control company in Singapore to be certified with ISO 14001, for environmental management systems. This holds us accountable to standards, which give the requirements for environmental management systems, and is of global relevance for organizations wishing to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner.
The ISO 14001 award recognises and affirms: the global significance of organisations operating in an environmentally sustainable manner requires successful attainment of the fundamental requisites for environmental management systems. The very nature of pest control necessitates a direct impact on the environment and the organisms within it. There are many indigenous insects that are pests to human activities and health. Vectors of disease such as mosquitoes can spread disease and death whilst subterranean termites cause economic damage and distress as they destroy homes and property. A key part in ORIGIN’s environmental commitment is to avoid the conventional approach in pest control, where large volumes of insecticides and other chemicals are dispersed into the environment, and beneficial insects are eliminated along with the pests.
Instead ORIGIN’s modus operandi is to focus on maximum source reduction through physical means such as exclusion methods and reducing breading grounds, so as to employ chemical based methods only when necessary. Even in the application of chemical based methods, ORIGIN has consistently innovated to develop new pest control solutions that utilize chemicals which only target specific pests thus ensuring that beneficial insects remain unharmed. Furthermore, ORIGIN utilizes a combination of science and nature to achieve pest control, and our innovations over the years such as the introduction of biological mosquito control and the ORIGIN Termite Baiting System, are not only low in toxicity, but they provide a targeted yet effective solution to the specific pest problem whilst minimizing impact on the environment and other beneficial pests. Negating these threats to our health and property, whilst minimizing our negative effect on the environment and non-target organisms, has become a defining principle of ORIGIN’s business.
This dedication to protecting the environment is further evident in our becoming the first pest control company in the world to achieve ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification. This was the culmination of our commitment to more environmental responsibility and this extended into our daily operations as well. This status was further reinforced by us becoming the first pest control company in Singapore to publish an Environmental and Social Report, outlining our past and present activities, as well as our vision for the future.
To date, ORIGIN has continued our dedication to the environment, by making the environmental report a yearly affair, as well as continuing our efforts at spreading this ethos in our sphere of influence. ORIGIN spreads this message through outreach programs to schools and associations, as well as to our existing customers and contact base, we aim to broadcast and share our commitment to the environment with as many people as possible.
