What is Thermal Imaging?
All objects with a temperature above absolute zero (- 459° F) emit infrared radiation, none of which is visible to the naked eye. As an object heats up, it will radiate more and more energy from its surface. The technique for making this invisible radiation visible is called thermal imaging, and involves the use of a special thermal imaging camera.
What has this got to do with Termites?
A thermal imaging camera is extremely sensitive when used to detect relative temperatures of different areas of an object. It is able to detect temperature variations as small as 0.1 degrees centigrade. When Termites are active within a structure or its fittings, they change the ‘thermal profile' of an object, for example a doorframe, by hollowing out the wood in places to create their galleries. Whilst this takes place beneath the surface of the wood and the damage done is not yet visible, it can be detected with thermal imaging technology.
What are the benefits of using Thermal Imaging for detecting Termites?
There are numerous benefits to using Thermal Imaging technology to detect termite activity. The ability to detect that termites are present before any damage is visible means that corrective action can be taken sooner and therefore the amount of damage done is reduced. Furthermore, thermal imaging is totally non-destructive and non-intrusive. There is no need to poke holes in a surface to determine if there is damage beneath it.
The technology is entirely safe and poses no threat to health whatsoever, as the equipment only detects infrared radiation naturally emitted from an object and does not emit anything itself.
What is the advantage of thermal imaging over other non-destructive detection devices?
Other technologies, for example microwave or acoustic meters, require a more or less flat surface and physical contact. It is very difficult therefore to ensure a thorough inspection has been conducted, as certain areas may be inaccessible, i.e. false ceilings. As thermal imaging is non-contact and an object may be viewed and analyzed from a distance, this barrier is removed.
Will I be given a full report of the survey?
Yes, a detailed report will be submitted to you outlining our findings. This report will contain the thermal images of any anomalies that were detected. We will also advise you as to the full range of termite solutions available.
